Introduction to My World

Hey guys, I'm Katie! My majors are German and microbiology, and I'm a senior this year. I hope to attend medical school, so that's a big part of why I am majoring in microbiology. I chose to study German primarily because my dad is from Germany, and my mom speaks German, but also because I wanted some breaks from the science-heavy classes I have to take for microbiology! I studied abroad in Germany the summer after my freshman year and was able to travel to Iceland, the Czech Republic, Italy, and England during my trip, too.

I got to eat lots of yummy food and hike all summer, which are the two things I enjoy doing most. German food itself isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I was able to eat tons of Turkish and Vietnamese food while I traveled. Some of my favorite foods include traditional-style Japanese ramen, Indian or Pakastani food (shout out butter chicken!), and Italian food.

In addition to eating, I also love to cook and bake! I find both really therapeutic and an excellent way to learn about different cultures. Though she can't enjoy most of this food with me, my dog, Mackie, loves to go on my hikes! She is a four-year-old boxer and a total psycho, but obviously, I love her. I also have a dramatic cat named Henry that my family and I rescued.

Other activities that I love include biking, yoga, and reading. I have always been a HUGE fan of Harry Potterboth the books and moviesbut I also enjoy memoirs, and the next book I plan on reading is Where the Crawdads Sing. Some of my favorite films include Hidden Figures and the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. My absolute favorite show, however, is Madam Secretary!

  1. Hey Katie, I really enjoyed reading about your travels. I personally haven't been outside of the country but my dream is to go to Spain. I am a spanish minor so I couldn't think of a better place for me really. I saw that your a HP fan as well! I could talk for hours about it. I actually just did the Storytelling assignment and created my own characters in the HP world and adapted to original story to that! Here's the link if you are interested in reading it. https://huntersmythologyandfolklore.blogspot.com/2020/09/week-2-story-basilisks-return.html

    1. Hey Hunter!
I haven't been to Spain yet, but I have a lot of friends who have and they all loved it, so I hope you get to go soon. And Harry Potter is the BEST. That's such an awesome spin to put on your story, I'll go read it now!

  2. Hi Katie,

I think it's so cool that you're majoring in both Microbiology and German! Your picture of the Blue Lagoon looks dreamy; I'm sure it was nothing short of amazing to visit all those countries. I also love to eat yummy food and enjoy baking as well! This may be kind of embarrassing, but I watched all of the Harry Potter movies like 3 times earlier this summer. I wanted to read all the books afterwards, but I never got to it because I was consumed with my summer class and work. Also, I've heard great things about Where the Crawdads Sing, so I hope you get to enjoy reading it soon.

It was nice to meet you!

  3. That is such a fabulous combination of majors, Katie, and being able to share that German connection with your dad is great! Plus of course the German mythology and folklore tradition is AMAZING. Have you read Brothers Grimm or any of those German folktale classics in any of your classes? If you want to do that for this class, that would be so cool! If you are interested in the Brothers Grimm in particular, there is a fabulous website by a folklorist (now retired), Dan Ashliman, who was a specialist in the Brothers Grimm, so you can find easy access to the German and English of the stories here: Grimm Brothers' Children's and Household Tales - link ... although of course you could also use this class to learn more about Turkey and Japanese and Indian and Pakistani and Italian stories. The food is not just a click away online... but the stories are! And maybe your beautiful Mackie and furball Henry will make an appearance in a story too. A neighbor of mine years ago had a Boxer and he was the best dog: he would stand up and put his paws on your shoulders and you could feel that he was a total powerhouse, all muscle, but very gentle too. Plus Harry-Potter-inspired stories are always welcome too of course; I can guarantee you that you are not the only Harry Potter fan in the class! So, just let your imagination run wild and see what kinds of stories take shape. :-)

  4. Hi Katie! Props to you for being a Microbiology major, I am in Microbiology right now and not sure how I feel about it just yet. I think it is awesome that you are double majoring in German and had the opportunity to study abroad there! Not studying abroad is one of my only regrets from college and may have to do that in grad school. I too love authentic ramen and just recently was introduced to it. I share some of the same intrests in reading, hiking, cooking and hanging out with my pup Luka. Good luck with senior year and med school.

  5. Hi Katie! It is interesting that you choose German and microbiology as your majors! For me, I really admire those people who choose to study a new language since I feel so suffering and difficult when I try to study English. I also like to travel and taste delicious foods. Do you have any plan to travel to China? I would like suggest you to go to Xian and Shenzhen. Many fantastic scenes and foods are waiting for you there.

  6. Hi Katie!
My name is Kylie and I really loved reading your introduction post. I think it is so cool that you are a German and Microbiology major, that is so impressive. I enjoyed the pictures you posted and reading about your study abroad trip. I am sure that was an incredible experience, I envy you. Your dogs are also so cute. I have a dog as well. Do you plan to travel more after school? So nice to read about you!!

  7. Hey Katie, I'm definitely jealous about your travels because it's my hope one day to be able to travel to Germany. I was a German minor for a hot second before I decided to, inevitably, drop it, but I still enjoy speaking the language, even with as terrible as I am. Also, your animals are super cute and it's been forever since I've seen a boxer dog; Mackie is super adorable, by the way.

  8. Hi Katie! I am a Chemical Biosciences and Letters major, pre-med track as well. I wish you the best of luck going forward! I'm currently taking Latin, so it was interesting to read that you are a German major. Your dog is precious, and the Harry Potter books and the Pride and Prejudice movie are two of my favorite things!

  9. Hi Katie! It is so awesome that you are studying German and Microbio. That is so awesome that you have gotten the chance to go to Europe and German in particular. I have always wanted to go and I will hopefully get to go the summer before medical school assuming COVID is better. I also love to cook and find it very therapeutic. You have very cute pets and they seem so sweet.

  10. Hey Katie, it’s nice to meet you! I think it’s awesome that you are majoring in microbiology and German. It sounds like you know exactly what you want to do after college, so that’s a good start! That’s really neat that you got to study abroad and see all of that neat stuff. I’ve never been outside of the states, so hopefully one day I can make it over there. It was nice to meet you!

  11. Katie girl, we are meant to be friends! Wow! So first off, when I got to go to Europe for my senior trip in high school I was in absolute heaven. I got to travel around France, Germany, and Switzerland and I loved every single second of it! And secondly, I'm also the biggest Harry Potter fan! #Hufflepuffandproud I feel like I live and breathe it to be honest! And crazy enough, Hidden Figures is also one of my favorite movies ever, I cry every single time I watch it. I can't wait to get to know you better throughout the semester!

  12. Hi Katie!
Henry and Mackie are SO CUTE! I grew up with boxers, and there are truly no other dogs like them! It's amazing you took German on as another major. As a Professional Writing major, a degree in science would be daunting enough, but you decided to add a franken-language on as well; that's incredible! I'm really glad you got your study abroad early. Hopefully you didn't have any study abroad or travel plans canceled by covid. Good luck to you with your graduation and future!

  13. Hi Katie! It was great to learn more about you through this introduction. That's a really cool combination of majors! I'm impressed that you are learning German. That is incredible that you have been able to travel abroad! I loved your picture from Iceland. The spicy ramen in your picture looked amazing! It seems like you definitely have appreciation for other cultures! I hope you have a great semester!

  14. Hi Katie! I loved seeing all of the pictures you included! I love how you are majoring in German and microbio. It is so important to learn another language, especially in the medical field. What are your favorite things to cook and bake? Over quarantine I started to bake and I really liked it. That is so cool that you have been able to study abroad to different places! I wish you the best of luck on your journey to medical school!

  15. Hi Katie!

First off, I am an avid dog lover and your boxer is so cute! My mom grew up all around boxers and I was unfortunate enough to be allergic to animal hair so we had to get a hypoallergenic dog! I think it is so awesome how you want to travel but also that you follow through with it. A lot of people have the wanderlust and the dreams to go see the world and never do. I hope to be an adventurer like you one day!

  16. Hey Katie! How're you liking microbiology? I'm a senior microbio student too and just finishing everything up. I get definitely get waning a break from so many science heavy classes. It gets really tiring. I'm sure you'll make it into medical school! You seem to be pretty well put together and on top of everything. Butter chicken is a top tier dish no doubt. Also, your doggo and kitty are very cute, be sure to give the lots of pets from us!

  17. Hi Katie!
I also love love Harry Potter too! I've watched the movies countless times. I actually never read the books until this summer during quarantine. I'm so glad I did. I think I'll have to reread the series again sometime haha. Also I am a pre-PA student so it's a similar route to yours. There are science heavy courses in our prerequisites as well. So this class is a nice break from all of that. I hope you feel the same way! Science courses can definitely be stressful so it's nice to have something different.

  18. Hi Katie,
Oh man, that ramen looks amazing! I need to go to Goro when it gets cold. They have great food and such a cool environment inside. Also, you're a cat and a dog person! I love when I meet people that have both. They're cuties too:) I bet Germany was awesome. Did you have any issues during the pandemic? I tried to travel, but Hawaii closed down for tourism lol. Maybe you'll enjoy reading some of the German fairytales this semester! Have a great rest of the year.

  20. Hey Katie! It is so nice to virtually meet you and learn just a little bit about you. I am so jealous of how much you have gotten to travel already, I have only ever been to Canada outside of the US. I absolutely love your dogs, my neighbor has a similar looking dog to Mackie and he is a wonderful pup. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your semester!

  22. Hey Katie! I love your pets! They are precious. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to read about your travels! You seem like you have been very blessed to be able to see as much of the world as you have! We also have a lot in common, given that I too love to cook/bake and hike. There really is something therapeutic about all of those activities. I think using your body in a productive way like that is really good for you. Anyway, I loved getting to know you and I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!

  23. Hello Katie!
It's a pleasure to meet you, your pets are gorgeous. When you said you dog is a boxer, i thought about my roommate's dog who is a mix of a pit and a boxer. I also like the miso ramen picture. I was actually at Goro this weekend and i had the same plate as you. I hope you enjoyed it. Wish you luck for the rest of the semester.

I love that you've had the chance to travel so much! I love to travel too and I think its such a great experience! I also love the picture of your pets. They are so sweet! There is so much fluff in Henry's picture. I just can't handle the cuteness! I hope you have a great rest of the semester as things get crazy with finals!

  25. Hi Katie! I think that is awesome you are learning German! I am sure that your parents enjoy being able to speak with you in another language. When I scrolled past your picture of Mackie, my husband excitedly made me go back so that he could point out that she looks nearly identical in color and stature to our dog, with only a different shape to his face. I too am a fan of Harry Potter, mainly the books. When I was growing up, the new books always released around my birthday, so it was always a special time for me to get the new book. It was nice getting to meet you!

  26. Hi Katie!

Your animals are adorable! Being a German major is also super cool since I hardly ever hear about people in that major. I'm so jealous of the places that you have travelled to as well. It sounds amazing. That picture of food that you included looks very interesting. Was it good? It definitely looks very tasty.

Anyways, it's great to meet you! Have a great day!

  27. Hi Katie,
I think it is super cool you are learning German! I actually took that as my foreign language in high school. I also think it is awesome that you love to travel. Over the years my family and I have been fortunate enough to travel as well and it is definitely a good time. I hope the end of your semester is going well! Wish you all the best.

  28. Katie, nice to meet you! I enjoyed reading your introduction. My roommate is also a microbiology major, pre-med, so I know how challenging that major is. Good for you! I hope that med school applications are going well (if you're applying this year). I loved all the personal photos you have on your introduction. Your pets are super cute. I especially liked the picture of your dog! I'm also a huge Harry Potter fan. I was NOT a fan of the new spin-off movies, however. I hope you've enjoyed this class and have a good dead week/finals week!

  29. Hi Katie! I don't know how you do it: German AND microbiology! That sounds super hard in my opinion, but you seem to have things under control. Also, congratulations on graduating this year! It might seem a little scary with COVID and everything happening during your last year of college, but things will get better with time. I loved reading about your animals and your plans after college, you really have a solid plan lined up once you graduate! Anyways, it was very nice to meet you, and good luck in your future endeavors!

  30. Hi Katie! Wow, what beautiful pictures you provided in your introduction post. I loved reading your post because these are my favorite to read. You seem to be very smart considering you are a German and Microbiology major. That is extremely impressive and takes so much time management skills. Your dog is adorable as well. It is so nice to meet you as well. It is so cool you are a Harry Potter fan because I am too. I loved your post and hope your finals go well.
